October 28, 2022 — This year, 14 U.S., Canadian and Haitian Jesuits were ordained to the diaconate at several different Masses in the U.S. and Canada. For a Jesuit in formation, ordination to the diaconate is the final step in preparation for priestly ordination in the Society of Jesus.
On May 14, 2022, four Jesuits were ordained deacons by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, SJ, at Our Lady of Lourdes in Toronto: U.S. Jesuits Daniel Kennedy and William McCormick, SJ; Canadian Jesuit Erik Sorensen; and Haitian Jesuit Robenson Siquitte. Kennedy, McCormick and Siquitte are all currently in theology studies at Regis College in Toronto; Sorensen is in theology studies at Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.
Five U.S. Jesuits were ordained to the diaconate on Sept. 24, 2022, at St. Ignatius Church in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, along with two other Jesuits, by the Most Reverend Peter J. Uglietto, V.G., Auxiliary Bishop of Boston. The Jesuits ordained were Nicholas Albin, James Antonio, Andrea Bianchini, Jong-yun James Kim, Josué Rubén Salguero Cortez, Damian Torres-Botello and William Redding.
The new deacons are studying theology at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
Five American Jesuits, along with two other Jesuits, were ordained as deacons on Oct. 22, 2022, by the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California. The Jesuits ordained there were: Alendro Da Costa, Daniel Dixon, Velenson Gomes, Justin Grosnick, Aaron Pierre, Aric Serrano and Simon Zachary.
These new deacons are currently studying theology at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California.
The new deacons were ordained as part of their formation to become priests, and they are authorized to proclaim the Word of God, to preach and to preside at the sacraments of baptism and marriage and at the rite of Christian burial. Learn more about the stages of Jesuit formation at BeaJesuit.org.
