Spirit & Verse: A Prayer for Liminal Spaces

February 18, 2022 ā€” Spirit & Verse is a monthly column of original poem-prayers composed by Cameron Bellm, a Seattle-based writer and mother of two whose ā€œPrayer for a Pandemicā€Ā went viral, bringing solace and comfort to many struggling during COVID-19.

A Prayer for Liminal Spaces

These February days always give me pauseā€”

A slender sliver of ordinary time

Suspended between Christmas and Lent.

As sacred time folds over on itself,

Forming ever more layers of purple and green,

We find ourselves yet again in the already,

But still quite firmly in the not yet.

Perhaps these days are a loving reminder

That so much of our space is liminal,

So much of our time spent watching, waiting.

Lord of mercy, your gaze ever upon us,

Send us a blessing for the in-between.

Amen.

Cameron BellmĀ is a Seattle-based writer of prayers, poems, and devotionals. After completing her Ph.D. in Russian literature at the University of California, Berkeley, she traded the academic life for the contemplative life, informed by Ignatian spirituality and Catholic social teaching. She is the author ofĀ ā€œA Consoling Embrace: Prayers for a Time of Pandemicā€Ā (23rd Publications, 2020). Cameron and her husband have two young sons, and, blessedly, playing with Legos often nurtures her spiritual life as much as reading the lectionary.
